This
neighborhood was at the time of the French colony the borough
of the Intendant, the king's representative in New-France.
The Intendant was empowered by the king to administer the colony
( a territory of 20 millions of square meters at the time) and that
included finance, justice and commercial matters. The Intendant
had his "palace" in our borough which explains why the steep
hill in front of the house is called Côte du Palais (Palace
Hill).

From
this old picture of the Palace gate below, you can
see though the main arch of the gate, a part of the roof of a house
that we believe is ours ! This gate was destroyed under the English
Regime in the late 1800's
